Methods Through cluster sampling, two hospitals were selected from the secondary hospital and tertiary hospital in Hunan Province, respectively. The general information questionnaire, the Servant Leadership Behavior Scale for Nurse Leaders were used to survey the nurses working in the four hospitals. Results The mean of total score of nurse-reported head nurse leadership was 82.97±16.02. The single factor analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the perception of servant leadership behaviors of nurse leaders among different hospital levels, personnel status, and overtime (P<0.05). Over-long working time, employment status and hospital level were the independent influencing factors of nurse-reported head nurse leadership. Conclusion The nurse-reported head nurse leadership is at a medium level. Strengthening the stability of nurses’ employment status and reducing overtime work are helpful to improving the nurse-reported head nurse leadership.
