Abstract:Abstract: Hyperuricemia (HUA) is an important risk factor for the incidence and development of heart and kidney diseases. Urate-lowering therapy is the primary treatment for HUA. We previously discovered natural product baicalein (BAL) showing urate-lowering effect. Herein, effects of BAL on heart and kidney were as-sessed in a chronic HUA mouse model induced by co-administration of potassium oxonate and hypoxanthine for 8 weeks. Mice treated with allopurinol (AP) were used as positive control. The results showed that BAL ameliorated HUA associated cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial fiber disarray and interstitial fibrosis, which was consistent with AP in terms of efficacy. However, unlike AP, BAL didn’t ameliorate HUA associated re-nal function decline, glomerular basement membrane thickening and tubular dilation. It indicated that BAL may protect heart in HUA while not contribute to kidney protection. This study may provide useful informa-tion for BAL application in research of HUA with heart or kidney diseases.
