Abstract:Abstract: Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) is a common nitrogen metabolisation-related enzyme in organisms. GDHs of higher plants only play a complementary role in ammonia assimilation due to their lower affinity for NH4+, but play an important role in carbon and nitrogen metabolism, photorespiration and stress response. GDHs of lower organisms have a higher affinity for NH4+ and a stronger ability of ammonia assimilation, so they can be heterologously expressed in crops to improve the nitrogen utilization efficiency. Herein, the re-search progresses in the application of GDH genes derived from lower organisms in crop genetic improve-ment are summarized. The researches on GDHs of lower organisms in enhancing the nitrogen utilization effi-ciency and stress tolerance as well as improving the nutritional quality of crops are mainly reviewed. Mean-while, prospects for functional mechanisms, selection criteria and application of GDHs are put forward.
