Abstract:Abstract: To investigate the associations between sex hormone levels and calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements in Chinese female adolescents, a total of 721 female students were recruited as volunteers from a secondary school in Jiangmen, China. The basic information was collected using a questionnaire and the physical examinations were conducted at the same time. Total testosterone (TT), total oestradiol (E2) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) were measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay, and the bioa-vailable testosterone (BioT) and E2 (BioE2) were calculated. Bone parameters were measured using quantitative ultrasound. Linear regression model was used to analyze the associations of bone parameters with sex hormone levels. Furthermore, the difference between the associations of sex hormones and bone parameters before and after menarche was detected. After adjusting the confounding factors, results showed that TT and BioT were positively associated with bone parameters in female adolescents (sβ=0.078~0.100, P<0.05). In fe-male adolescents, T was significantly related to bone parameters before menarche (sβ=0.206~0.282, P<0.05) but not post-menarche (P>0.05). SHBG was found to be inversely associated with speed of sound (SOS) (sβ= -0.079, P<0.05). The results supported that T was a positive predictor for bone parameters before menarche but not post-menarche, and SHBG could have influence on bone architecture in female adolescents.
