Abstract:Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are diseases caused by loss of neurons or myelin sheaths in the brain or spinal cord. Elderly population has a high risk of developing NDs, and the symptoms of NDs progress rapidly within years. The diseases will bring huge impacts on these patients physically and mentally, and meanwhile, impose additional charges on their families. In recent years, more and more researchers have focused on NDs. Multiple model systems, particularly Caenorhabditis elegans, have been applied to look for pathogenic factors as well as effective treatments of NDs. This article aims to review the application of C. elegans in studies of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including the identification of causes of these diseases, the advantages of ND model of C. elegans and the application of C. elegans in potential drug screening for NDs.
