Abstract:Abstract: Pancreatic islet β cells are typical excitable endocrine cells that secrete insulin in response to increased glucose levels. Functional failure in β cells probably results in variety of diseases, particularly diabetes mellitus (DM). There has been growing research interest in insulin secretion and regulation of pancreatic β cells, especially in the ion channels, such as K+ and Ca2+ channels. However, less research has been done on Na+ channels, a kind of cation channels widely distributed in the cell membrane with multitudinous subtypes. These channels have proven to have a variety of physiological functions via participating in action potential formation, substance transportation and intercellular communication and so on. Here, the subtypes, physiological characteristics and functions of Na+ channels are reviewed to offer new insights for the research related to pancreatic β cells.
