Summer in China:Hunan Normal University International Summer Program (May-August)
Improve your Chinese language skills in Changsha, a city of media art in the world.
This International Summer program immerses you in Changsha and provides students with the opportunity to experience Chinese Campus life at one of China’s top universities.
About Changsha:
Changhsha is a famous cultural city with a long-standing history of more than 3,000 years. Asone of the first batch of historic and cultural cities and one of the firstnational excellent tourist cities in China designated by the State Council,Changsha boasts in abundant famous historical sites. For example, Yuelu Academy and Mawangdui Han Tomb. Changhsha cultivated numerous historical figures,such as the famous poet Qu Yuan, famous politician Jia Yi, the founding father ofthe People’s Republic of China Chairman Mao Zedong,President Liu Shaoqi. Changsha is a livable city with pleasant weather and a city that enjoys unique beauty of harmonious integration of mountains, rivers,islands and the city. Since 2008, Changsha was honored as ‘the Happiest City’ in China for 11 consecutive years. In2017, Changsha became the first city in China to receive the title of City of Media Art in the world, which is one of the seven categories of the UNESCO creative cities network project.
About Hunan Normal University:
The program is based at Hunan Normal University(HNU). Founded in 1938, is a national‘211-project’university since 1996, and‘double first-class’unviersity since 2017. Ranks 59thamong China’s top 100 key universities in 2017. In2011, HNU was elected as one of the ‘Top Ten Famous Universities’by all the international students in China.HNU campus is located in the foot of Yuelu Mountain and facing the Xiangjiang River, enjoys a quiet and peaceful nature environment.
Program Overview:
During the summer, you will complete one academic semester of Chinese in twelve weeks. Intensive language courses take place every morning,followed by workshops and lectures in the afternoons. By meeting with Chinese students from local universities who serve as language partners, you will gain extra practice outside of the classroom and can explorethe city with your local peers. Group excursions and cultural activities are organized throughout the duration of the program. A one week independent travel break allows you to enjoy time outside of the classroom to explore this vast and dynamic country on your own.
Schedule for 12 weeks:
Week 1-2: Online course: preparation for studying in China.
Week 3-10: Intensive language courses, workshops, lectures and cultural activities.
Week11-12: Independent travel break. Questionnaire survey and feedback of program.
Daily schedule:
The language classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:30am-11:30 am.Reading, writing, speaking and listening of Chinese language are emphasized in the classroom.
You will have a break for lunch at noon where you can eat at an on-campus canteen (cafeteria).
Workshops and lectures are often scheduled at afternoon from 14:30-16:30 during the week, and cultural excursions take place on weekends.
Workshops:
In addtion to the weekly classes, participants will also takepart in 2-3 workshops during the course of the program. Depending on student interest, workshops in Taijiquan,Chinese calligraphy, Chinese traditional music, and Chinese dance may be available.
Lectures:
Different theme and field trips to give participants opportunities for experiential learning.
u About China:Gain a deeper understanding of the past, present and future of China through museum visits and lectures on the Chinese political system. Local experts are invited to speak about contemporary topics such as the Chinese economy and doing business in China.
u Innovation and creativty:Engage with our local community’s leading entrepreneurs, science and techology industrial park to learn more about innovation and creativty skills.
u Community engagement:Examine and compare community functions between China and your own country and participate in some volunteering activities.
Activities:
The program will include several group trips to historic and cultural sites including(the following points are subject to the actual arrangement):
Beijing:The Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Summer Palace etc.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: the World Natural Heritage site, also the vantage point of the movie Avatar.
Changsha City Tour: Orange island, the oldest college in China--Yuelu Academy, the Fire Palace.
You will be matched with a language partner (local Chineseuniversity student) to help you practice your Chinese outside of the classroom.Taking the initiative to spend time with your partner in a relaxed, out of class setting will also give you the opportunity to gain perspectives on whatto see and do while in Changsha.
Transcripts:
No credit is granted to students who do not complete the fullprogram.
A certificate of participation will be presented to each participant confirming their actual contace hours and subjects. Credit transferis up to the discretion of each participant’s home instituation.
Housing:
You will live in a shared suite in Hunan Normal University'sInternational student dormitory with another program participant or an international student studying at HNU. Each dorm is equipped with a private washing room and a balcony, TV, fridge, telephone, water heater, internet,air-conditioning and furniture. Public laundry, kitchens and entertainment rooms and classrooms are also located in different floors. Under the condition of tight housing,it is possible to arrange to live in a hotel around campus.
Program fees: $2200 USD
Including tuition, housing, cultural excursions, group dinners, orientation and cultural activities. Health insurance, international flights and daily meals are not included in the program fee.
Funding your Summer in China:
Eligible students may apply for the following scholarships applicable to this program.
l Chinese Government Scholarship: if you are from the United States, Canada or European countries,HNU can help you applying for Chinese Government Scholarship
l Or HNU will offer the Summer Language Scholarship for students apart from above countries. The scholarship maximum is $1100 USD.
